People often think of aging in a negative light. They think of it as a loss, this is especially true in Western culture.
More and more people are obsessed with preserving their youth at any cost. They’re willing to spend a vast amount on cosmetic surgery, botox, fillers, and implants in an attempt to stay wrinkle free.
But maybe we should have a different perspective on old age and old people.
A German photographer, Karsten Thormaehlen has made it her mission to celebrate old age and it’s hidden beauty.
She’s traveled the world has taken pictures of centenarians.
“Beauty as an aesthetic concept is always something that comes from personal experiences. Most of the time it’s seductive and misleading.
“It comes and goes. In this world it has an ‘expiry date’. I’d rather try to capture inner beauty. For example a person could be one hundred years old, but the way she looks, her eyes, the smile it radiates and you just feel this is and has always been a happy person.”
Here are some of her incredible photos.
Age is a privilege that many don’t have the pleasure to experience.
Only a few lucky couples get to grow old together.
Beauty is ageless.
