There are lots of people – those who get periods as well as those who don’t – who think that period sex is gross, and unsurprisingly there are even more people who think that going down on someone who is having their period is even grosser.
Well, we’re about to lay down for you and explain why it isn’t actually as gross as we have been made to believe.
There’s nothing wrong with sex – or going down on someone – while they’re on their period. Nothing dirty or shameful about it.
If you’re a person who doesn’t feel sexy while you’re on your period, then fair enough. But take a second and read on for some info on why period sex might actually be worth exploring…
If the only reason you’re refusing to go down on someone who is bleeding is because it’s “icky” then we’re about to lay down why you need to think about that.
There’s nothing unhygienic about period blood. No harm can come to you if menstrual blood gets on your tongue/face/hands. It’s literally just blood, uterine lining, and regular vaginal discharge. Nothing poisonous about it.
Not only does it present no risks to you, you’re also unlikely to get a whole lot of blood come your way anyway. People only lose approximately 30-40ml of blood during a period, i.e. over the course of seven days, which is hardly anything to begin with. So the amount of blood you may lose during 20 minutes of oral is next to nothing. So even if the person you’re with has a particularly heavy flow, the fear of drowning in a blood bath is unfounded.
On top of that, if you are still worried about it, you can just stick to the clitoris rather than exploring the area, and the person you’re with could even use a tampon if it makes both parties more comfortable.
But other than the “stop being a wuss, it’s not actually gross” reason, period sex can actually have health benefits for the person on their period.
Having sex on your period can:
- Alleviate cramps
- Reduce pain
- Shorten the length of a period, due to the contractions of the uterus making the lining and blood come out faster
- Boost your mood
- Reduce any PMS-related moodiness
- Make you feel sexier when you’re likely to be feeling a bit bloated and rubbish.
To top it off, sex on your period will alleviate some of the ‘period time horniness’ many people experience.
But seriously, if you don’t think period oral is for you, then that’s obviously perfectly fine. But if your reasoning is because “it’s gross”, then you should really reevaluate your stance.
