Okay ladies, so we all know that once you’re in a long-term relationship, the sex life can become a bit, shall we say, irregular? As you become more comfortable with your partner, you feel your sex drive start to decrease, as everything becomes a bit too routine. You find yourself going from once a week to once a month. If that…

But finding that balance and indulging in an evening romp has benefits other than the obvious. Research shows that when you stop having sex, your body stops doing a handful of helpful things as a result. So ladies, if you can push yourself to ‘Netflix and chill’ (Yes that is what it means!) on a more regular basis, believe me, you will REAP the benefits.

Let’s take a look at six crucial things that happen when you stop having sex…

1. You may struggle with loss of lubrication

Although this side effect is more common in older women, it’s not unusual for it to happen in younger women who aren’t having sex too. This is because of the lack of oestrogen in the body, which can happen if you’re not having sex or aren’t taking care of your sexual urges yourself. Dr Lauren Streicher explains, “If you take a young woman who’s 20 or 30 years old she’s going to have plenty of oestrogen around to make sure those tissues stay healthy, elastic, and lubricated when she’s not having sex. If you take someone who’s 60 and has no oestrogen, she has lost that piece of it.”. All the more reason to do the deed!

2. Your stress levels increase

Psychology Today tells us that ‘the endorphins released during sex are ideal for leaving your worries behind and putting an instant smile on your face.’ For the single ladies reading this, don’t worry! Exercise releases the exact same endorphins and satisfying yourself is also an instant stress reliever. Off you go!

3. You lose your sex drive

You might find that after going a long time without sex, you find it difficult to get back in the mood. This is natural. Sari Cooper, a certified sex therapist told Reader’s Digest that, “For some people who refrain from sex, they begin to feel more sluggish, with less vitality and hunger for sex. Out of sight out of mind is how some of my clients describe the scenario.” So push through that feeling and you’ll come out the other side feelin’ good!

4. Your period pain may get worse

Ladies, what a great reason to stay intimate. If you struggle with period pain then you might want to get down and dirty to relieve those pains. You may not feel great about having sex whilst it’s your time of the month but those who do can find that it works wonders for menstrual cramps. Dr Lauren Streicher says, “The uterus is a muscle and many women will actually have a uterine contraction when they orgasm, which will cause the blood to expel more quickly, which will in turn decrease menstrual cramps. Also, there may be an increase in endorphins, which also will help with menstrual cramps.”

5. Your vaginal walls may get weaker

And eventually, this can lead to a bit of pain. Typically, the vaginal walls will get thin and weaken to the point of tearing while entering menopause so you need to keep the blood flow going to prevent that. Sari Cooper explains, “Without regular frequency of intercourse as you get older the walls of your vagina thin out and can lead to painful sex when you finally get back into the sack.”

6. You might have a wet dream or two

Yes, ladies, that lack of sex life might start to seep into your sleep and under your sheets! This is particularly likely if you’re not seeing to yourself, either. Eventually, your subconscious will catch up and try to achieve that orgasm without the help of someone else. A clear sign that you should be pursuing sex or masturbation yourself!

So Acidheads, go and reap the benefits that come with having intercourse! Besides, we’re forgetting the best bit; it feels great! What do you think of our list? Are you ready to get down and dirty now?
